blog post written by jasmine okai

Fresh off the success of ‘Fio presents: Cardiff’s Got Talent’, Fio barrelled on full steam ahead with its’ next project just a week later:

JUMP CUT TO Fio’s Summer Film School 2019

A three-week project working with young people from Cardiff with a passion for film.

Week One: Induction Week

This first week was all about getting to know each other and getting familiar with filming techniques, film language and technical equipment. We had a range of masterclasses from leading professionals in the industry, such as Suzanne Packer Welsh actress who has appeared in Stella, Casualty, Keeping Faith, Death in Paradise, and more!), Nick Patterson (Production Director and Founder of Video Production Company, Storm & Shelter), Kyle Lima (Welsh actor who has appeared in the Gavin and Stacey Christmas special, Merlin, Doctors, among others), as well as other talented individuals.

Week Two: Creation Week

This penultimate week was spent creating, devising, exploring. Basically all things to do with plot, story, character, camera angles, you name it was thought about and panicked over! Arguably the most creative week, creation week was spent devising and writing scripts, sourcing costumes and props and intensive acting workshops and character work.

Week Three: Filming Week

The final part that we all came for: Filming!

This week was jam packed with our young people acting in front of the camera, working behind the camera and handling equipment, filming on location (including East Moors Youth Centre, Splott, Cardiff and Llandow, Vale of Glamorgan). At the end of this week, we produced our very own short film ‘Gizmo’, centring on the very pertinent issue, climate change.

Fio’s mission has always been simple: make the arts accessible and that is exactly what we did!

We offered a very discounted price of £30 to take part in our film school, as well as offering bursaries —> Huge shout out to our amazing sponsors and all round absolute legends, Big Lottery Fund and Ffilm Cymru, for making this possible!
